Hello, I'm Lia Mendez, an artist and graphic designer specializing in nature illustration.
I offer design and illustration services to environmentally-focused organizations for educational, marketing, and branding purposes. All of my work is created using 100% human intelligence.
Listening deeply to the plants, birds, bugs, and critters all around me is a practice that nurtures me creatively, intellectually, and spiritually. Over the years, taking the time to appreciate the sacredness of nonhuman life has become about much more than filling a sketchbook; it’s a way of coming home.
I believe that art and stories have the power to change the world. I earned my BA in Literary Journalism from the University of California, Irvine and my Master's of Science in Environmental Studies from the University of Montana.
I have completed certificate courses in Natural History Illustration and Graphic Design, and have earned Master Naturalist certifications in both California and Montana. I've completed multiple Botanical Illustration workshops, as well as a 2-day Nature Journaling workshop for educators led by John Muir Laws.
I was a Printmaker in Residence at the Zootown Arts Community Center in Missoula, Montana in 2022 and a Pine Needles Artist in Resident in Marine on St. Croix, Minnesota in the summer of 2023.
